Individual Pieces
These are miscellaneous works done for a variety of reasons or clients. From the whimsical Fabric Washed Stones to the serene Out of an Orange Colored Sky, my work is done to fit a particular client’s needs; to compliment an existing setting or to set the tone for a new space.

Out There
15″ x 15″ x 1/2″D
This fanciful look at planets was inspired by my hand-dyed black and white cotton which turned out looking very moon-like. The red planet in front of the moon projects half an inch off the face of the piece (using black foam core board). Applique, fusing, hand-dyed and commercial cotton fabrics, surface textured with stitching. An original design.

Rainstick
19.25″W x 59″H
Right there in my hand! A dark stormy night staring back at me! The central piece of fabric was a joy to dye using silk-black and strong purple. The blue/white fabric suggested lightning bolts which I embellished with stitching. Of course, there had to be rain, so. . . .
Hand-dyed, painted and commercial cottons, pieced, fused and hand- and machine-stitched. An original design.

Whispering
18″W x 52″H
Created for a Surface Design conference exhibit at the Kansas City Art Institute, this two-sided piece shows off some of my discharge-dyed fabric. The colors of the silk are soft, soothing and remind me of a monk’s robes. Dupioni silks, discharge-dyed cotton blend. Hand and machine stitched. An original design.

Global Flick
30″W x 47″H
Having fun with perspective and showcasing my hand-dyed fabrics. This central fabric has the look of oceans and continents. The borders hint at film sprocket holes. Hand-dyed and commercial cottons, pieced, appliqued and heavily surface textured with stitching. An original design.

Winter Dreams: California Storms
26″W x 38″H
This piece was born of my frustration with an overly wet winter. I dreamed of tropical sun and bright colors, but constantly awakened to rain and cold. Cottons, taffeta, Mylar thread, ink, pieced, fused, appliqued and surface textured with stitching. An original design.
A private collection

Dessertigo
35.5″W x 43″H
While watching a “things to do in the Bay Area” TV show, I saw a chef from Vertigo restaurant (SF) making a beautiful dessert of green cakes, yellow sauce and berries. It inspired me to “cook up” my own version. The elements are floating just enough to hint at vertigo. All cotton hand-dyed fabrics, pieced, appliqued and surface textured with stitching. An original design.

Everything Passes With Time
42″W x 26″H
Watching a science piece on television about DNA, I saw a multi-stemmed pipette being used to drop bright yellow liquid onto a cool aqua blue medium. The colors were outstanding, but also the shapes stayed in my mind’s eye. So, this piece developed to include small microbes or cells in the medium. Everything in this piece relates to taking the measure of the human essence. Hand-dyed and commercial cottons, pieced, appliqued and surface textured with stitching. An original design.

Moon Dreams
84″W x 90″H
A commissioned piece for a New York “Art Apartment” incorporating the use of positive and negative spaces. The design revels in the kinetic energy of the various elements. The playful attitude and exuberance of the piece takes it’s cue from the existing components of the apartment design. Cottons and blends, pieced, appliqued and surface textured with stitching. An original design.

Out of an Orange Colored Sky
49.5″W x 45″H
Sand and sea; an island vacation in the middle of nowhere. That’s the dream the picture in my calendar was selling. That image was still with me months later as I dyed fabrics blue, turquoise, lavender — watery colors. Then I heard Nat King Cole singing “Wham! Bam! Alakazam! Out of an orange colored sky.” You see before you the result of this mind-meld. Hand-dyed cottons, pieced, appliqued and surface textured with stitching. An original design.
